8-27-12
I'm no longer sleeping on the floor! Yay!
After all the growing I did while on Ebeye, I became willing and able to actually work at being a friend and what not. I grew past my past and got over myself, you might say. But a few days ago I realized that deep down I still secretly believed that people will pretend to like me and that they'll abandon me at a moment's notice (if that).
Well, I got myself proven wrong, and this makes me very happy. I'm not sure I can describe how excited I was to realize that I do have a group of friends who think of me when things are happening, a group of friends who actively include me. I suppose it might be a little disheartening to find that I still unknowingly expect to be left out, but I also think that's just a feeling that I'll have to keep overcoming as I continue to grow. (So, thank you, my friends, for being your wonderful selves and for being my friends.)
I got some errands done today--returned a textbook (first time I've ever needed to do so), saw some people, talked with my adviser for like an hour (that's a story for a different post, once the thoughts percolate), tried to do some scheduling. I'm also attempting to be at least a little like Hermione and read some of books ahead of time, just because I know I will be super busy during the semester itself.
I still need to buy shelves and a desk chair. Maybe I'll find some at the Samaritan Center or Goodwill. They're too danged expensive at Wal-mart.
Oh, and I still don't know what I'll do after graduation. Fun fun.

Hectic Slide
2-2-12
No, not the electric slide. Most of my weeks have, to this point, felt like hectic slides to Thursday evening, a scramble to get everything done and accomplished and what not. Papers and assignments and projects and what not--all a hectic slide toward the day (Friday) when I only have German due the next day.
I still haven't been as consistent as I'd like to get with exercising--when you feel like there's no motivation to persevere, it's much more difficult to actually do so. It's one of those "spirit willing, flesh weak" sort of situations. I haven't found that one exercise that I just love to do--well, scuba diving and snorkeling, but that's rather hard to do in landlocked Tennessee.
When I was reading Waking the Dead, I was struck by something the author said. He maintains (and I agree) that people are made for community, and that everyone needs a fellowship. My fellowship--as I'm mentally starting to call it--consists of people scattered across the country. They're friends who'll give it to me straight, who'll pray for me, who'll spend time with me (if we're in the same locale, that is), who actually care about me and about my life, who I have fun with. I'll do the same for them.
(Most likely, if you're in my fellowship, you probably know, and I hope I'm in yours.)

Um
1-19-12
This semester is either going to kill me or make me stronger. Probably the latter, but of course it feels like the former. I'm so glad it's Friday tomorrow, which means it's almost Sabbath. Yay! Even though this week is just as long as any other week, it's felt really long to me. *sigh* We haven't even had a full week of school yet.

Concert Week
10-14-10
It's a concert week, and an honors seminar night, which is the only reason I'm still at school on a non-work night at 6:35 PM.
Unfortunately, rehearsal and honors seminar overlap, so I only get to go to half an hour of rehearsal. I know my parts, but that's not the point.
*sigh* I wish I had more time with my friends. I miss being able to hang out at night like we did on Ebeye. I'm such a quality time person, and I wish I had more of it. And words of affirmation. Those are nice as well.

Seriously?
9-22-10
First of all, I'm an education major. I am planning to be a high school teacher. (Brave soul, I hear some of you saying while others mutter, Idiot.) I also spent a year attempting to teach high school while I was a student missionary in the Marshall Islands.
Those glimpses into the life of a teacher still do not make me ineligible to be frustrated and/or annoyed by the fact that four of the six teachers I have on Monday all have important things scheduled for that day. The list is as follows: German chapter 2 test, chemistry chapter 3 quiz (read: mini-test), first draft of Essay #2 due, and working bibliography for history research paper.
First of all, thank you for assuming that I have all day Sunday to do your project. I happen to work for five hours each Sunday so I can pay for my education (you know, that part of my bill that the federal government hasn't covered in outrageous loans). Second, thank you for assuming that I want no life other than doing your project. I certainly do not want to spend time with friends nor exercise.
Yes, I know I picked my course load. Yes, I know that I've previously handled eighteen hour loads and a fifteen hour work week. Yet somehow this semester is different, and I am not entirely sure why. Perhaps it's due to the fact that I'm taking two upper division classes, a language class, honors seminar, a religion class, a general science course, and being part of the Wind Symphony--and striving to do my best in those classes? (That's what I get for being an overachiever. Silly me, wanting to do well.)
I'm not a person for all-nighters. I physically can't deal with that, since I need a minimum of six hours of sleep to actually function during the day. I have to spend at least a tiny bit of time with friends, or I'll go insane. (I'm not joking. Two weeks ago, I saw my friends on Sunday and didn't see them again until the Thursday of that week. Argh. I'm an extroverted introvert. I like my alone time, but I need people, too.)
So what's my solution to my self-chosen overload?
I'm doing homework a day ahead, which I've never had to do before. What I mean is that it's Wednesday evening and I just finished up most of Friday's work; I just have to do my lab manual for German, which requires listening to a CD and I don't want to bother my roommate with that tonight. (I'll do it tomorrow before chemistry recitation.) Tomorrow night and Friday afternoon I'll work on Monday's projects and Wednesday's reading for History of England because a classmate and I are leading the class discussion that day.
And I haven't even gotten started on the stuff I try to get done that doesn't have anything to do with classes or work, like my writing or my work with the Student Missions club or reading for pleasure and fun or exercise or being with friends.
I am trying to figure out how to balance it all, and this week has been better than last week, but I am seriously stumped as to how my teachers all assigned something important for the same day next week. I'm trying to live in the present, but not at the expense of the future (as Obi-Wan tried to point out to Qui-Gon). *sigh* This year is going to be difficult.

Weather or Not
2-24-10
Why did you tease us, weather? Why were you warm this weekend and on Monday, only to plunge us back into the cold and cloudy? We had seen the sun! Don't you know how important that is?
I miss the sun, blue skies, and the sound of waves crashing on the shore. I miss being able to walk slowly if I want because I'm not freezing. I want it to be comfortable outside.
Perhaps I was spoiled last year with the high temperatures and sunlight; my mom certainly says that my blood has thinned. But I never did like the cold, except to play in the snow when I was a little kid. I've always preferred warmth. Also, at the beginning of last year, none of us liked how hot and sticky it was. It took us most of the ten months in order to be adjusted to the climate. So, anyways, the point is that I want it to be spring. No more of this "the worst winter Tennessee has ever seen." I mean, come on, weather. Have some decency and at least go back to the fifties. Please?
On a completely unrelated note, I have a midterm this morning in 19th Century British Literature, I need to keep practicing "Grand Canyon Suite" and my new Wind Symphony music, I restarted a RP this week (I'm one of the GMs), I've been line-editing on the WD Forums, I've been working on the second draft of my shortish story about Tacy and Nat, I wrote an essay about Henry V (the person in the play and not the play itself), have procrastinated by writing this blog, and now am going to go review again for English class.

Apology
2-22-10
It's midterms. I am sorry.
Also, I am having difficulties figuring out what to write for this blog. You think that would be easy, being a writer, but no, it's not. I need to do some planning.
Hopefully I can get this blog onto some sort of a decent schedule.
Thanks for being patient.

Snow, Again
2-14-10
Every weekend it has snowed here in Collegedale. Then it melts. That is frustrating. As a Northerner, I think that if it's going to snow, it might as well stick. I'd also rather for it to be spring, but that's still a bit of time off. I hope it's warm for SonRise on April 3.
SonRise. I've been invested with the title of "Assistant Scene Director--Mob 2" but that just means I was really good at screaming evil things at the top of my lungs and I'm supposed to help the scene director and his assistant with the mob. I'm also helping with recruitment, so if you're in the Collegedale area and want to help out, I have all the practice times of the non-auditioned cast members. We need mobsters, believers, and travelers and such.
I get to read Pride and Prejudice and Henry V for homework this week. I've read P&P before, and I know it is rare to have a pleasant and agreeable activity for homework, so I will enjoy it.

Drafts
2-10-10
I have many drafts of many things.
First, I'm working on a second draft of a short story I'm working on. I'm writing it out longhand (because I've been working like that since I was in eighth grade [long story]) and it's actually flowing, for the most part. Unfortunately, I'm still having difficulties in fitting in writing time in my schedule (which is pretty full).
Second, I'm brainstorming ideas for my term paper in 19th Century Literature. We have to pick something in modern culture and see how the Romantic principles we've discussed are used in them. I've chosen to do my paper on Stargate: SG-1, and so I'm trying to generate a list of instances that fit into those categories.
Third, I've had to figure out what to write for this post. I've been so busy that (unfortunately) this is one of the things that fell to the wayside, but I hope that I can be a better time manager and idea-generator.
On a slightly non-related note, we read bits of Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto for class today. I can totally see why Jane Austen satirizes it in Northanger Abbey, which is a hilarious book.

Busy, Again
1-31-10
This week will be very busy, and my life will only get busier as the semester gains momentum. College Bowl games start this week, and, of course I'm involved. I need to put together another issue of Roots. I have two tests and two papers this week, as well as regular homework for my other classes. There's a group project that my suitemates and I have yet to do much work on, and it's due a week from Thursday. I'm trying to balance a social life, a work life, and an academic life--and trying to do my writing when I can. I have to exercise and practice my bass clarinet outside of class (and we have a Wind Symphony concert in a little under two weeks, and I am still failing to go fast enough when I play parts of some of the pieces). Things are starting to ramp up for SonRise, and I'm technically an assistant scene director, even though I'm only supposed to be one of the mob leaders, but that means a few more practices for me (one on how to direct, since I know diddly squat about that). *sigh* SO much to do, and there are only 24 hours in each day, a good portion of which I'm asleep (and needfully so).

Busyness

The Safest Job on Campus
So, there I am, sitting at work, waiting for the grammar contract client to show up. They never did, but the rest of the library's human contents did. Why? Tornado warning, complete with a campus-wide alarm that has this annoying voice (won the contest for most annoying voice EVER, that voice did). The all-clear sounded ten minutes before my shift at the Writing Center, which is in the basement. The annoying alarm voice made it impossible to concentrate, and there were tons of people talking. We were relieved when the alarm went off, and we all had this corporate noise of resignation when it came back on five minutes later. Anyway, we were in the basement, and so all was well. (It didn't hurt that the real potential for tornadic weather was a good distance away, to the north of us, and moving in a northeasterly direction. Knowledge all gleaned from weather.com and family members obsessed with weather.)
Fitness for Life
I had my second pre-assessment today. It was depressing, slightly. I only got 31 sit-ups, 11 guy pushups, am heavier than I was a few months ago (though I did eat a few hours before class), and feel that my partner is disgustingly healthy, compared to me. Good thing we're not graded based on comparisons between people, but on ourselves. Also, I got to see the Gym-Masters' gym, with its springy floor. That was cool.
Homework...Time Management...ARGH
I usually am decently good with time management. But I didn't realize how time consuming 300-level classes are. Argh. I'll figure out. Also, I have a lot of tests and things due in two weeks. ARGH. Then a concert right after that, the music for which is being frustrating to me because it's supposed to go fast and I can't go that fast yet. ARGH. I haven't been able to freewrite much; it's been essay this and paper that. ARGH. But I am doing something good by getting an education, so not ARGH, but YAY.
Onto homework. More later.

Plans for Thanksgiving Break
11-24-09
I think I'm going to go to bed early.
Then, tomorrow, I will go to Wal-Mart, do my laundry, and work on my education portfolio. At some point, I will write a book review, sort through my books, practice my bass clarinet, create the next Roots newsletter, go through my clothes again, work on my current short story, chill with friends on Thanksgiving Day, and jam to Christmas music on Friday.
In short, I shall be busy during break. The above is the short list that I can think of off the top of my head.

I will update soon, with actual information on what's been going on in Ashlee's world.
But not today. I'm going to bed.

Tidbits and Random Things
9-24-09
Last night a group of us gathered at the house Linda stays in to have the first SM Bible Study. I'm henceforth calling it the Midweek Retreat, for it sort of felt like the re-entry retreat a weekend or so ago. Linda, Grace, Kristina and I sang a little, and talked about Romans 12. It's a jam-packed chapter, for sure. It was good, and the time flew by. Also, worship credit, which is nice when you have to keep track of such things.
I am reading The Grapes of Wrath for Survey of American Literature. It's good so far, although I do have to keep putting it down every so often because there's only so much regional dialect I can read before my head starts spinning. But it's deep, and that's probably one reason why it's a classic. Actually, I'm doing a lot of reading, when I can fit it in. I got so used to being able to read last year that I miss it. I even read more at Timber Ridge than I do here at school. Oh, I do plenty of reading...of my textbooks, that is. Reading for pleasure is a much rarer occurrence, though I do try to indulge a lot of the time.
I'm also trying to squeeze my writing in, amid reading assignments, essays, and math homework. Some of the more memorable and tedious jobs at camporee have morphed into a new short story of mine--at least, I'm planning for it to be a short. Some of the main characters include a space pirate who isn't all that he seems, a Galactic Exchange teller who's stronger than she thinks, and a freighter captain who's currently in more development (he only appeared yesterday, and seems to be related to Jack Harkness). Ten points for that reference.
If you asked for a one word description of my current status, I would be hard-pressed to choose between "tired" and "busy." I'm not sure which one fits more. I'm very glad to be doing all I'm doing, and I'm just as busy as I was last year (I think), but here is more stressful. I think that may be due to the sheer abundance of possible distractions (like Facebook and other sites, benefit of a faster Internet connection that reaches into my dorm room). I'm aware of some of the problems, but have I taken many steps in order to correct my missteps? Not a lot of steps, anyway, but I have taken some. We shall see in the weeks and months ahead.

More later.
