The annual Southern Adventist University Wind Symphony Christmas concert (also featuring the SAU Jazz Ensemble and the Southern Ringtones) went well last night. We had a decently filled gym despite the cold and the fact that it was a Saturday night. (I'm sure the offered convocation credit brought some of the other students in, but some just really like our music.)
I didn't play as well as I would have liked on all the pieces, but the sections I was most worried about I did well enough on that I'm sure no one knew. The trick to doing Christmas music is that most of it is recognizable to most, if not all, of the audience. I always seem to end up on the edge of the stage for Christmas concert, which means that everyone gets a great profile of me and I'm always in the upper corner of the video playback while the Jazz Ensemble is playing. We all got compliments afterward, so I'm sure people enjoyed it.
After the concert, I went to Taco Bell with Teliesha, Justin, and Chris. We waited approximately twenty minutes for our food (you think they'd hire more people for Saturday nights, but whatever, we all got to talk--and good quality conversation, one of my favorite types of conversation, if you haven't figured that out by now) and after Justin and I ate, we went back to Teliesha's apartment and watched most of a movie. We would have finished it but Chris and Justin had to get back to their dorm room, I had to get to my apartment, and Teliesha needed to have the guys out by 1:00 AM.
Interspersed between hurrying through the blastingly cold wind and working with clients at the Writing Center today, I got much of my homework done. It's weird to think that we're in the week before finals--not so weird that I still have tons of homework to do this week.
And I'm still looking for a ride north on the sixteenth. I'm sure it'll work out.

Weather or Not

Why did you tease us, weather? Why were you warm this weekend and on Monday, only to plunge us back into the cold and cloudy? We had seen the sun! Don't you know how important that is?
I miss the sun, blue skies, and the sound of waves crashing on the shore. I miss being able to walk slowly if I want because I'm not freezing. I want it to be comfortable outside.
Perhaps I was spoiled last year with the high temperatures and sunlight; my mom certainly says that my blood has thinned. But I never did like the cold, except to play in the snow when I was a little kid. I've always preferred warmth. Also, at the beginning of last year, none of us liked how hot and sticky it was. It took us most of the ten months in order to be adjusted to the climate. So, anyways, the point is that I want it to be spring. No more of this "the worst winter Tennessee has ever seen." I mean, come on, weather. Have some decency and at least go back to the fifties. Please?
On a completely unrelated note, I have a midterm this morning in 19th Century British Literature, I need to keep practicing "Grand Canyon Suite" and my new Wind Symphony music, I restarted a RP this week (I'm one of the GMs), I've been line-editing on the WD Forums, I've been working on the second draft of my shortish story about Tacy and Nat, I wrote an essay about Henry V (the person in the play and not the play itself), have procrastinated by writing this blog, and now am going to go review again for English class.

Snow
1-29-10
It is snowing. Actually, it's like periods of snow and periods of rain, yet the snow is sticking because it is cold. Up in the North, we'd call this 'heart-attack snow' because it's so wet and heavy. Nice for snowballs. The snow started falling at about 1:00 PM, right as I was starting Arts and Ideas class, and by the end of the hour, it was already piling up.
I have my blinds up, and it's getting heavier now. The radio's on, and they're commenting on how many (all, especially if secondary) roads are slick and icy, and how people shouldn't go out driving in this weather and they're commenting on where the accidents are. Some are even pretty close to campus. I would think that would be a given, but this is Tennessee. This isn't something regular, and drivers from this region aren't as careful, it seems. You can't drive in snow the same way you drive in rain! I guess I could be wrong, but yeah, it just looks like it's getting worse outside.
I should spend some time writing out my assignment list for next week, since I have two tests and two papers due next week. ARGH. I will be very busy on Saturday night and on Sunday. Anyway, I should be productive, but I feel like curling up in my quilt and reading.

Tornado Warning...AGAIN
1-22-10
So I was in the middle of watching my online class when I heard the sirens outside and knew that I was about to have to go to the dorm basement. So I paused the video, gathered up my homework, headphones and computer, grabbed my ID card and headed to the basement, all with the annoying voice alarm blaring.
In the basement I found an outlet, plugged in, and tried to turn on the campus wireless. Shoulda figured, but I discovered that it doesn't work in the basement of Thatcher South--so I couldn't watch the rest of the class. So I turned on iTunes and stuck my headphones in my ears and read for Arts and Ideas. I had the music up LOUD because the people next to me were giggling and watching Friends. I don't hold it against them, but some of us had homework that we were going to finish. :D
After about half an hour, forty-five minutes or so, I was allowed to go back upstairs. I watched the last ten minutes of class, finished reading for Arts and Ideas, revised my essay that's due today, submitted it to Turnitin, read for American History II, and then I went to bed. *sigh* I didn't get to go exercise because I was sitting in the basement because "a tornado has been spotted in your county..."
I am SO glad that it is Friday. Now if the severe weather can be kept to a minimum, that would be nice. Also, as a random thought, I am toying with creating a blog dedicated just to writing. I'll keep you updated on that.

Ice Day
1-8-10
We had an ice day. People keep calling it a "snow day," but since we only got a smidgen of snow, it doesn't really qualify as a "snow day" to me. (Actually, I think it's because people are worried about drivers not knowing how to drive in either snow or ice, unlike many Northerners.) Anyway, I slept in until 9:30, took a shower, and then I snuggled into my blankets and read a book. Then I ate lunch and halfheartedly tried to do some homework (I think I've gotten the word I want to study for Linguistics!) and now I'm writing this blog.
You know, my hometown's public school system canceled classes and my church has even canceled the service tomorrow because the snow is so bad up in Northern Indiana. Even more worse than what I drove through on last Sunday. My mom called me and said that the forecast calls for a possible 20 more inches on top of what they've gotten in the last week. They're the ones who need the snow days. Me, I just needed to sleep to help get over the illness that I got last Sabbath--and so this was a much-needed break for me.

First Day of Classes
1-5-09
So I'm in the midst of my first day of new classes for this semester. Modern English Grammar and Linguistics looks to provide me with lots of homework--I already have a take-home exam for Thursday (the exam actually being a homework assignment with the extra rule of NO CORROBORATION, which, to me, is a given, unless the teacher says otherwise). Also, I need to pick a word for my etymology essay (my proposal for it is due next week).
Fitness for Life--well, other than the facts that I have to fit even more exercise into my schedule than I already have and that we'll do a lot of exercising outside (IN THE FREEZING COLD!!!!), I think I'll like it. The teacher seems a bit laid back, but that's okay.
Now to my online orientation meeting for my online class, Health for Life. I guess I should be early to the chat room in case the teacher's there early. (I kid, I kid.)

There has been snow on the ground since Sabbath. I will probably post some of my good pictures, once I upload them to my computer from my camera. :)

SNOW!
12-5-09
I scoffed like many others did at the weather forecast, quite cognizant of the fact that snow rarely, if ever, falls in Tennessee. Still, I secretly wished that it would snow. Why? I can't remember the last time I saw it; it was at least a year and a half ago, for there was no possibility of me seeing snow last year, when the temperatures I enjoyed were between 60 and 95 all the time.
This morning I woke up because Amanda was getting ready for first service, because she and the rest of the Ringtones were playing in it. I was going to go back to sleep when I thought, "Did it snow? I wonder if it snowed." So I rolled out of bed and pulled up the blinds--and lo! there was snow on the branches and the ground and falling from the sky. It made me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. (Ironic, I know, how snow made me feel warm.)
While walking to church this morning (don't worry, it's only across the street!), I took pictures because I knew I had to document such an occasion in Collegedale history--as well as the excitement for seeing it for the first time in a long time. Granted, there wasn't much--and, now, at 1:20, it's mostly all gone, but it was there this morning, and I took pictures.

I like being warm, and thus I'm going to go snuggle into my blankets and take a nap before the Wind Symphony Concert tonight at 8 PM in Iles. (Christmas music and a convocation credit!)

Wind Symphony and Some Random Facts

Our concert last night went well--definitely not perfectly, but well enough that we got applause (unless they were just being polite). I actually played my parts in "Variations on a Korean Folk Song" better than I have ever played them in the last two months. Yay! Today: no woodwinds sectional. Wednesday: CHRISTMAS MUSIC. Needless to say, I am excited about getting new music to practice and play. December 5th's the concert, in Iles (probably).
Random Facts
-It is very cold outside for it being October in Tennessee. Even the people who were here last year say it's extraordinarily cold. Like frigid. I shiver and hurry to class, and still wear flippity-floppities when I can.
-I am enjoying reading current student missionary blogs. Any time I see a new update, it gets opened on a new tab and I read.
-I miss being on Ebeye. However, I got my yearbook yesterday! And some of the kids from the class I sponsored wrote me notes in what is basically decent English. I felt all warm and fuzzy inside.
-I have an American Literature test today, and I should be reviewing for it instead of making this post. I also have an actual midterm in Christian Beliefs tomorrow morning, and a test over our entire textbook in Introduction and Foundations of Secondary Education tomorrow afternoon. ARGH.
-I am trying to fit in my writing. And making the next Roots newsletter. And sleep. And socialize. And have fun. *sigh*
