Meat Market

5/20/14

On Sunday, I delayed coming back to Ann Arbor and went instead with my mom to a meat market about forty-five minutes north of my hometown. The shop has workflow issues (in my SI-trained view), but everyone's really nice about waiting for their number to be called in order to order whatever meat.

When we got there, they were serving Customer No. 12 or so, and we had No. 23, so we're chilling, talking to other shoppers and to each other. All's well.

Then our number gets called, and Mom goes up to order. I hang back with the cart because getting the cart that close to the case among all those people wouldn't be so easy.

Anyway, the guy filling Mom's order was being really rude to her. Perhaps he was new and the crowd was overwhelming, perhaps he was nearing the end of a shift and was tired. Still, being rude to a customer is not really a way to make me like you.

My mom had ordered some ranch steaks and had just received them, so I put it in the cart and asked her what was special about them. (I seriously was thinking that maybe they were flavored ranch-style, but no, it's just a cut of meat.) While she was answering, the rude guy (who I was thinking, 'Man he's being so rude') started smiling and tapping the ranch steaks to show me which ones they were.

He turned away to do something else, and Mom said, "Ashlee, he's flirting with you."

"WHAT?" I mean, all I was thinking about was how rude the guy was.

"Yeah, he even winked at you." And lo he actually had. And thus I blushed and Mom laughed at me and said, "You're so red right now. I should have told you in the car."

And then he was nice to my mom for the rest of our visit.

Lessons learned:
1) I am absolutely horrible at noticing when guys flirt with me. I can notice it between other people, but when it involves me, I don't see it. It's going to have to be more obvious than a big grin and tapping on some steaks after previously being rude to my mom.
2) Granted, I don't have much practice with people flirting with me. Whether that's because I don't notice or because it doesn't happen is up to debate.
3) I'd like to think that it was my face he found attractive, but Mom thought it was my chest. Whatever. That's not up for debate.

More later.
